When it comes to partying, the end goal
is usually fun and relaxation, but a bachelor party is a little bit
different. The aim of the bachelor party (known as a stag night in
the UK) is to give the groom one last night where he can do whatever
he likes, it's the last night as a single man. It's giving him the
opportunity to say goodbye to bachelor life and prepare for marriage.
I think a bachelor party is the last chance to enjoy life with few
responsibilities. Of course, these days with so many couples
cohabiting or raising children prior to marriage the bachelor party
may have lost some of it's meaning. However, the tradition remains!
Bachelor parties get a bad reputation.
We have all heard horror stories of grooms having sex with a
prostitute or ending up 3000 miles from home and not making the
wedding, but I think if you are with your real friends they won't let
that happen. Besides, most guys have the bachelor party a week or
more before the wedding. As a serial Best Man, I've planned my share
of bachelor parties. Here are my do's and don'ts for surviving a
bachelor party!
- DO think carefully about your guest list, when planning a buddies bachelor party ask yourself if he really wants his future father in law or his grandfather to witness potentially questionable activities!
- DON'T collect the money on the night. It's customary for the bachelor NOT to pay for anything including drinks, lap dances or food. However, getting money out of everyone will be a struggle so decide on a budget before hand and collect the money prior to the party so that the organizer can control the pot.
- DO make sure the bride isn't having her party at the same bar!
- DON'T get tattoos! Groups of guys getting matching 'buddy'' tattoos is just lame! Yet so many bachelor parties end up that way! Just don't! Bear in mind no good tattooist would tattoo drunk people!
- DO keep an eye on the groom! It's all to easy to lose the groom bearing in mind he will be the drunkest of all! Oh, and take along a change of clothes for him!
- DON'T hire a hooker. Just don't its not classy to encourage your buddy to cheat before he even says I do!
- DO make sure the groom is comfortable. Not everyone wants to go to a strip club.
- DON'T ever talk about it – there will be no pictures either. What happens at a bachelor party stays at a bachelor party.
